The following message was sent on February 24, 2026 to the primary administrators of impacted plans:
Hello,
We are writing to make you aware of a bug related to flags for excess N that was identified in SnapPlus V3 and was corrected on Friday, February 20, 2026. Please review the following information and take action if needed for nutrient management plans (NMPs) you are responsible for writing or reviewing.
Bug Summary
Prior to Friday, February 20, legume N credits were not correctly counted in compliance checks related to excess N flagging. As a result, some fields that should have received excess N flags did not get them. These compliance flag messages normally start with "590 N over..."
Fields where a crop's nitrogen need is met with a combination of legume N credits and fertilizer/manure are potentially impacted. Note that legume N credits were being displayed and tallied in the nutrient accounting table during this time. The bug was that excess N flags were not appearing to alert users when their combined legume N + manure N + fertilizer N exceeded allowable rates.
Note: A positive value in the nutrient accounting table's "over/under" column for N is not the only consideration for when an excess N flag is given. For general information about when excess N flags are given in SnapPlus V3, you can review our help page here: https://wiki.snapplus.wisc.edu/en/management/excess-nitrogen
Recommended Next Steps
If you have already submitted a completed nutrient management plan (NMP) using V3:
- Run report NM2 Compliance Check again and review the “Application messages” table for excess N messages. This can be done on an archived plan or in the active (non-archived) plan.
- If needed, correct excess N applications and run updated versions of the NM2 Compliance Check and NM5 590 Checklist reports. To correct excess N applications on an archived plan, you will need to click “Amend” for the appropriate archive, make your corrections, and finalize changes.
- If needed, share the updated plan or send updated reports (including signed checklist) to the county/agency contact(s) responsible for reviewing your plan. If you are working with an amended archive, you will need to do the “request review” step on your new archive to share it with your county/agency contacts.
If you are currently working on your NMP in SnapPlus V3:
- On the Management Page in Field View, click the small triangle near the “Calculate” button under rotation settings to open the dropdown menu. Select “Calculate all fields”. Note that this may take some time to complete if your farm has many fields.
- Excess N application flags will appear on the Management page in the Nutrient Application Planner. For a summary of excess N application messages in the current planning year (2026) and future years in your planned rotations, review the “NMP Issues” tracker in the bottom right-hand corner of the Management page. Alternatively, you may run the NM2 Compliance Check report with the “Entire rotation” setting selected and review the “Application messages” table.
- If needed, correct excess N issues before finalizing and submitting your NMP.
If you are a plan reviewer (county or agency staff):
- If you have finished reviewing any V3 plans so far this year, request or run an updated version of the NM2 Compliance Check report for plans that include legume N credits. Reminder: If you have “read only” or “read only no maps” access to a V3 NMP or archived V3 NMP, you have the ability to run the NM2 Compliance Check report and review the “Application messages” table for excess N application messages.
- Communicate as needed with plan writers if you identify excess N messages during your review.
Why did I receive this email?
This email is being sent to two groups:
- SnapPlus V3 users who have the “primary admin” role for a nutrient management plan that uses a combination of legume credits and fertilizer/manure to meet crop N needs for at least one field and crop year. Receiving this message does not necessarily mean that you have a compliance issue related to excess N.
- County and agency staff responsible for reviewing SnapPlus V3 plans.
In addition, all SnapPlus V3 users will receive a banner notification the next time they log into V3 to make them aware of this bug and linking to the information contained in this message.
